Overview

Our Checkout Extensions option gives Shopify Plus brands the flexibility to validate the customer's shipping address before checkout is completed. Today, we support both:

  • 1 page checkout

  • 3 page checkout

The Checkout Extension can easily be added to your store in just a few minutes, this guide will walk you through the process. Once completed, Address Guard will automatically process validations including address rule messaging and blocking checkout as needed.

Get Started

There are two sections that you'll need to enable for the Checkout Extension to begin showing on your checkout.

Video Tutorial

We recommend to watch our 2 min tutorial that walks you through both steps below

A. Address Guard

From within your Address Guard account, go to:

  • Display > Prompt

  • Click the Before Checkout (checkout extensions) radio button.

  • Next, select if your store uses either: One-page checkout OR three-page checkout.

  • Once completed, click save.

Note: For an additional layer of validation protection, we also give the option of displaying our validation popup on the thank you page IF the customer does not fix their initial issues during checkout. This is an optional feature, and there is no additional charge for doing so.

B. Shopify

The next step is to add the Checkout Extension to your Checkout Editor within your Shopify Account. You'll need to go to:

  • Click Settings on the bottom left

  • Click Checkout > Customize (live theme)

  • Click on Add app block on the bottom left

  • Select the Address Verification by Address Guard extension.

The extension is now automatically added to your checkout page. Depending if you're utilizing one-page or three-page checkout, you can move the extension around to the desired location.

Extension Settings

The extension itself offers two additional optional settings which can be enabled at any time. To get started, you'll need to click the extension in your Shopify Editor, and then click the arrow dropdown to display the additional settings

  1. Allow app to block checkout - This is highly recommended to ensure customers are blocked during the initial attempt at checkout if an address rule or validation issue occurs. Customers are then prompted to update their address based on the messaging within the extension.

  2. Include app block in Shop Pay - If your store uses Shop Pay as a payment method, we recommend to include Address Guard to ensure all addresses are validated.

  • Make sure to save your new changes on the top right before leaving the editor. You’re now all done setting up your checkout extension.

FAQ

  1. How are address verification issues handled?

When a customer enters in their shipping address and clicks to continue, Address Guard will prompt the customer with a message if an issue is detected.

There are 3 types of messages that can be displayed:

  • Address Suggestion - if we have a more accurate suggestion for the entered address, we will indicate to the customer which changes they need to make to ensure the address is complete.

  • Address Issue - if we detect a problem with the address, such as a missing street number, street name, or even a missing apt # / unit #, we will prompt the customer indicating which changes need to be made before their order can be completed.

  • Address Rule - if you currently have an address rule that is enabled, and the customer enters an address matching that rule, we will prompt them with your custom text. For example, if you do not ship to PO Boxes and the customer enters such an address, a warning message will appear indicating you do not ship to P.O. Boxes.

2. Where can I customize the warning message text?

All of the address rule related warning messages can be updated within your Address Guard account by going to: Rules & Tags > Address Rules
